Etsy Obscurity: Vintage 1970's Alarm Clocks

I have never thought much about alarm clocks, and they are a crucial item in many people's daily lives. So I thought I would peek at a few oldies. I settled on the 1970's, an era not known for beautifully designed anything!

I fell upon Clockwork Universe by accident; ok, I was caught in  an endless Etsy browsing episode. Do not pretend you never do this!

Look at these Russian beauties I found there:

and this Chinese clock from The Big8S

And a few lovelies from the good ol' USA. This from  VintageShelfandWall

 and from Cwoeri

and who can forget these beacons of USA design:
Thanks for indulging me. I hope you enjoyed a little Etsy obscurity.

Etsy's BEST Weekly: Jamilla's Inkstrand

My friend Jamilla admits she is a dreamer and calls heself a jack(ie) of all trades. A huge history buff, she also devours sci-fi/fantasy novels, loves the Victoriana/Steampunk aesthetic, is fond of video games and retro fashion. The combination of her passions shapes her shop on etsy.com called Inkstrand in which she sells Nostalgic jewelry, fabric and paper gifts.
Take a peak:
Sci-fi Steampunk Ray-gun Adjustable Brass Ring

Red Winged Spindle Leaf Botanical specimen pendant

Vintage Inspired Skeletal Hand Anatomical Illustration - brass pendant

Get ready to be transported by to the Victorian era with, yes, a little Steampunk edge. Her shop is jam packed with items mixing these aesthetics as well as a little from each of her passions.
Custom Antique Inspired Silhouette Portrait Pendant

Rusted Machinery Green and Brass Gear Casing pendant

Inkstrand was born out of Jamilla’s multi-crafting skills, her tendency toward fabric hoarding, (we understand!), and the freeway of ideas in her head. She makes everything by hand in her Portland Oregon studio using eco-friendly, new, recycled, and found materials.

I fell in love with the Fresh Lavender Victorian Ornamental Brass Ring

By now I am sure you see how Jamilla blends styles seamlessly to give each of her pieces a modern feel. For example, this Skeleton Key Pencil Case is perfectly modern pouch for keeping little items, especially keys! The zippered pouch is made with red or mustard cotton and hand stenciled with the image of a skeleton key in black silkscreen ink. Other designs are available in this same pouch.

Who does not like an initial ring?

At Inkstrand you can custom order yours,in a ring or a pendant. Each monogram piece is hand-stamped in white polymer clay with an antique looking font in a brass bezel. The piece is then cured, hand-painted and encased in jewelry grade resin.

This Whirlybird pendant is my favorite. It brings me back to my childhood when we would open up the sticky end and put them on our noses. For this pendant, Jamilla was inspired by 19th century botanical specimen illustrations, these lovely pendants are created by suspending a plant fragment in clear resin against an aged paper background with handwritten notes.

Wayfaring Magnolia... Watch out, Anthropologie

I just bought this at Wayfaring Magnolia. I swear. I could not help it. It is so perfect. The price was fair, I took one look and that is all she wrote.
Amanda, the shop proprietor from Wayfaring Magnolia on Etsy.com is our wayfaring angel. She is a self proclaimed  “wandering gypsy woman” who is searching the earth for its beautiful treasures to share with us!

This being said, her shop changes as often as her interests change along her journey. Another reason the shop changes, items do not last more than a day or two and they are sold!  You never know what you will find, from high style vintage wear, photographs, artwork, button covers, gift tags, jewelry, needlepoint, and more. Sort of like a store that we all know and love.

Wayfaring Magnolia is an antiquish, and vintage shop with a high fashion edge.  I like to say it is: Anthropologie + Authenticity.

Amanda wanders, gathers, re-purposes, refinishes, recycles, up-cycles and creates. The secret behind her fantastically stocked modern retro shop is her keen eye and vision to see a diamond in the rough. Originally from Nashville; right now,  she is literally crossing the country  in the process of moving. I cannot wait to see what she has for us when this part of her journey is over,  in about two weeks.

This au courant Thrift-ed Satin Clutch has two new satin applique flowers.

Visit the clearance section! Right now, there are lots of sales. Items move fast so take a peak. I especially love these frames that Amanda makes with decoupage over a wooden frame backing. There are several designs and they are on sale

Imagine Joan, from Madmen wearing this dress, and men getting woozy as she passes and leaves them with only her perfume.

I know you will want more Anthrop, oops, I mean Wayfaing Magnolia so I have compiled these places to visit and connect with Amanda.

I leave you with the wise words of Amanda, (and The Beatles)
One of my favorite songs and a good philosophy to live by:
The painting is done with acrylic paints on 8"x 10" canvas
